Teeth Whitening Side Effects

Home teeth whitening and in-office teeth whitening are absolutely safe, when used as directed of course.  Clinical studies show that bleaching is not harmful to the tooth structure or the enamel. However, there is some possible side effects that you should be aware of :

  • Teeth sensitivity :

This is the most common side effect to teeth whitening. In contact with the peroxide, some people can feel a slight “zing” to shooting pain. It is not dangerous and usually resolves by itself in a few hours, but can be painful enough to not be able to go through the whole treatment.

Individuals with gum recession and visible cracks on their teeth are prone to teeth sensitivity. In these cases, a toothpaste containing potassium nitrate for sensitive teeth is recommended before a treatment.

A product with a higher level of peroxide has more chances of causing pain if you have sensitive teeth.  Choosing a lower peroxide product is safer, but the results will be slower.

  • Gum irritation :

Some individuals also experience gum irritation resulting  from the level of peroxide in the product. Once again, the discomfort disappears when using a lower peroxide product.

  • Uneven color :

There are two reasons to the “technicolor” effect you could have after whitening your teeth.  The pre-condition of your teeth will affect greatly the results of whitening. Restorations such as porcelain veneers and dental crowns can’t be bleached.  The surroundings will be whiter, witch will result in your teeth having different shades of white.

The second reason for uneven coloring would be the method chosen for teeth whitening. Strips, for example, have great reviews for results (Crest Strips), but have some complaints for uneven coloring. Since the strips are straight, your teeth have to be straight too. Otherwise,  each tooth will not be in contact with the product the same way.

Surprisingly,  a lower peroxide product will give you quite a few advantages : it will greatly reduce the risks for tooth sensitivity. It  will give you more control on the results you want and reduce the possible zebra effect you could have with a higher peroxide product.
